Wow! Meathog jig heads and Mirrolures have been what’s catching fish!
We have brought some slabs-o-speckled trout to the net on our last few trips fishing at the hot ditch with Mirrolures and meathog jigs. Although there is no more hot water seeping out into the Elizabeth River. So the hot ditch I guess, is now the not-so-hot ditch…Cold Creek, whatever. Crowds have vanished and catches have been tough to come by. However that is what I love about fishing. You gotta keep working to figure out whats gonna get you a bite, where did the bait go, how cold can the water get and actually get a bite. Am I marking trout, rock, or nanny shad? The other day I chuckled as guys had to bust ice in the cove to get a bobber in the water. I am sure they got the last laugh because I heard of some good bites still coming off the live bait. #gallery-5 { margin: auto; } #gallery-5 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-5 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-5 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
So we fished hard and some hours no bites and then other times enjoying some nice flurries of activities! We have been trolling and at times casting to the trout. There have been some real nice fish if you wanna work for it. Quarter ounce Trokar meathog jigheads in pink and with a chartreuse assassin paddletail duped sir- pig- in-heimer trout and a few other studs! New Penny flash worked great as well. Thank you Bob for pouring these sexy little jigheads! As the guys in the Wrightsville Beach area told me ” man once you start using one you really cannot go back to the duller hook!” That Trokar is boss! We landed fish from 20-30 inches! No bendage on the hook with a 10 plus pound trout. Also Mirrolures have helped as well! MirrOdynes, and old school 52 mRs did the trick. I chuckled yesterday while casting, this exact lure was in my box when I was surf fishing over twenty years ago out of the red ruby ( my old jeep)! Maybe thats why I missed eight or ten bites in a row. I got some sick Trokar trebles going on tonight! Thanks guys for fishing and thanks to Chris and Josh for sacking me up!
